Phobias & fears

Release your fears

Living with a phobia is exhausting, and working around it quietly costs you things. The part most people don't expect: a phobia isn't only something to manage. It can be removed.

What it is

The fear isn't reasonable, and knowing that doesn't help

If you have a phobia, you almost certainly already know the fear is out of proportion. That knowledge changes nothing. Just thinking about the thing can set the anxiety off, and actually being near it makes the reaction automatic and overwhelming.

So you build around it. You turn down the job because of the lift. You drive an extra twenty miles to avoid the bridge. You sit out the family trip because it means flying. At that point the phobia has stopped being a feeling and started making decisions about your life.

A phobia is an intense fear of something that poses little or no real danger. They're common, they usually start in childhood, and having one says nothing about you except that a normal reaction got attached to the wrong thing. They also respond well to treatment.

Common phobias

Common phobias

  • Closed-in places
  • Heights
  • Flying
  • Highway driving
  • Insects, snakes and other creatures
  • Needles and dentists

That list is nowhere near exhaustive. A phobia can attach to virtually anything, and if yours isn't here, that doesn't make it stranger or harder to shift.

Case study

Noriko's fear of flying

Noriko travelled constantly for work and dreaded every trip. For weeks beforehand she carried a knot in her stomach that wouldn't shift. On the morning of a flight she'd wake up nauseous. On the plane: pounding heart, lightheaded, sweating, hyperventilating.

It got worse every time. Eventually she told her boss she could only travel within driving distance. He wasn't pleased, and she spent months expecting to be demoted or let go, and still thought that was the better option.

One session. Noriko took her next work trip by plane, and was looking forward to it.

How it works

Usually one session, start to finish

1

A free chat

Fifteen minutes. You tell me what the fear is, how long you've had it, and what it's costing you. I'll tell you straight whether it's something I can help with.

2

The session

We work on the reaction itself rather than talking around it. You don't need to relive anything in detail, and you don't need to be brave in the room.

3

The real test

The proof isn't in the room. It's the next lift, the next bridge, the next flight. You'll leave knowing exactly what to expect, and what to do if anything lingers.
